Paul Sabatier's Life of St. Francis of Assisi is considered the first 'modern' biography of this great universally beloved saint. It is richly poetical, mystical, and reverential without being sentimental or effusive. A beautiful simple meditation full of insight into Francis' conman humanity, it does not transform him into a remote icon of devotion. The author's "Protestant" outlook when it was first written (1890's), now seems only mildly liberal by post Vatican II 21st century standards. Yes, the work was originally placed on the Index of Forbidden Books for Catholics (in 1906!) because of some questions about it's historical details (as the previous reviewer noted), but it was removed from the Index in the 1960's some years before Pope Paul VI abolished the Index of Forbidden Books altogether in 1966. The Franciscans themselves now highly recommend the book, calling it "nothing short of astonishing in its power to touch the heart and revive the soul (Franciscan Friars TOR Website) and so do I. However, if one wishes a 'more reliable' version of Sabatier's work, then the freshly translated and slightly edited version by Jon M. Sweeny is available here at Amazon. It is entitled ' The Road to Assisi: The Essential Biography of St. Francis by Paul Sabatier". The English has been updated and some of the troubling details of history (minor to be sure) have been discretely removed. It also includes a lengthy introduction which explains why the book was originally placed on the Index of Forbidden books (over 100 years ago)and why the initial reservations no longer apply. There are some criticisms of Sweeny's edition in the comments section, to the effect that he omits Sabatier's own introduction and appendix citing his sources. Nonetheless, Sweeny has done an excellent job updating the English and he also includes some helpful annotations and notes right within the text. But of course, it's not free.Product details

Cannot find where I left off.
The author tends to go off on tangents regarding the Reformation. Also the author goes to great lengths in his criticism of anything to do with the Catholic Church.
This 19th century biography of St. Francis is considered one of the best. I can recommend The Road to Assisi to anyone interested in the life of one of Catholicism's favorite saints. I was hoping for something of a more personal nature, but it was a solid biography of the man, the founding of his Friars and the difficulty he had in keeping the church from changing his ideas; mostly of poverty.
I find every about about Francis - and there are many - fascinating. People often think of this beggar playing with the birds and squirrels but that is a small part of his persona. Francis was rich and decided to be poor and gave everything away including his family!! He was not a man who became poor. He chose to be poor. That is a concept that I struggle with Like Buddha he had the world on a platter and threw it
away and never looked back. I have struggled with that concept and I have concluded
I don't have the guts.
This is real history and even more interesting than some commonly believed stories. He was a Saint by anyone's standard. The Catholic Church is lucky to claim him first but he was a rebel and defies conformity.
This reads like an extended high school or college freshman essay on one of the most fascinating figures in the history of the Christian church. I didn't learn very much from it but that's because I've been reading *about* St. Francis and his theology for many years.
If all you want is a quick overview of the life and (shallowly) basic teachings of St. Francis, then this book might very well serve your needs. There's nothing really *wrong* with it. But if you want more depth about his teachings, keep searching. There are a number of excellent works out there.
I enjoyed this book. At times it got a bit too specific and detailed, but over all it has been something
that stimulated thought and action. Thoughts about the necessities of life and the pressures of the world
to conform. From there, decisions as to what can be done to simplify life and make it more focused on
living for Jesus so much more than living in the world. And then the question, "Could someone live this
way again, so surrendered to God and dependent upon His grace?" I wish I could say it could be me...
