For nearly a decade, Panoland curies — mutated survivors from a nation destroyed by radioactivity — have lived among the townspeople in the small town of Crooked Corners. Sixth-grade teacher Mr. Burmer faces each day as routine, despite the presence in his classroom of children whose stunning deformities often turn tragic. After an accident during a field trip, parents and school officials begin to question the presence of curie students in the school, provoking the anger of a mysterious group of militant activists. As politics, invasive species and an increasingly fractured population threaten to destroy the towns’ trademark charm, Mr. Burmer works to guide the destiny of a gifted curie away from the dangers inherent in his genes.

Octopedal, the curie fights back, but his clumsy, redundant limbs have no muscle tone, and besides, he’s not accustomed to this kind of struggle, wherein one creature hits another out of the blue, for no apparent reason, with a rock. His swollen lobster hands swipe at the darkness and suddenly another creature with eight arms drops upon him and begins to punch, only it isn’t another creature with eight arms, it’s four creatures four human males fueled by a surfeit of rage and alcohol. This happens so quickly that before I finish my call with Mrs. Crepin, before I stutter out my awkward well wishes over a tenuous, crackling line, the curie sheds his shell and attempts to crawl off, and the disgusted humans scatter and run, start their engines and hit the road.
But I remain ignorant of the whole ordeal for the 90 minutes or so I shop. I don’t know if Mr. Lardner sees the perpetrators of this crime when he leaves with his box of beer, probably to join Mrs. Crepin, and nobody mentions it to me as I wait in line or even when I swipe my credit card and sign the receipt with the cashier’s tooth-mangled pen. It’s only after I push my heavy cart through the automatic doorway — “Have a Nice Day!” — that I notice the yellow tape, all the squad cars and the obligatory slack-jawed crowd in a ring made opaque by their obesity.
The police can find no witnesses other than the stock boy who called them to say, “Somebody beat up a lobster, and I think it’s dead.”

Crooked Corners Elegiac eBook Erik Roycraft Reviews
I didn't know what to expect when I started to read this, but it's beautifully written. The story is clever and reflects the times we live in, part sci-fi, part commentary on modern-day America. The narrator is a good man surrounded by unique characters, townspeople trying to figure out what's going on in their world, others who have extra limbs or weirder problems. The scenes with the "curie" children and several of the chapters are really moving. I got a lump in my throat. I really hope more people find this book.
Although I'm no a science fiction reader, this book held my interest. Characters well developed. Intriguing idea for a book.
