Tolstoy on Shakespeare A Critical Essay on Shakespeare edition by Graf Leo Tolstoy Religion Spirituality eBooks
Although I have read the complete works of Shakespeare, I have never thought of them critically. I have been impressed by the word flows and I have enjoyed the straightforward plots. Reading Tolstoy's criticism has opened a new channel of thought about these plays. He makes very strong arguments for his views even if one does not agree with all of his basic premises. In total, this is an excellent essay.Product details

Tolstoy on Shakespeare A Critical Essay on Shakespeare edition by Graf Leo Tolstoy Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Tolstoy is one of the world's great writers, plotters, thematic-titian, and philosophers. He must be read later in life to get a different perspective on his work.
Judges Shakespeare as though Shakespeare were a novelist. Seems to be critical of Shakespeare's writing style when almost all Shakespeare's works are plays. Unless you view them as such they can be confusing.
Just a series of opinions without allowing for differences in taste... wordplay and poetry don't count as art, only religious lecturing in LT' s view.
It will tell you a lot about Tolstoy and nothing about Shakespeare.
Even though Tolstoy presents an amazing point about why Shakespeare shouldn't be placed in a position of adoration, I still love Shakespeare just the same. However, anyone who plans to seriously critique any work of Shakespeare for an English class or just for personal reasons- should really read this. Anytime you critique a work, you should see both sides and in this you're able to see a contrasting viewpoint of the "Shakespeare-is-perfection" common opinion.
Very interesting to read a contrarian view of The Bard that goes against the mainstream. In fact Tolstoy is quite negative, and makes a convincing case that Shakespeare pretty much ruined all the earlier works he based his plays on.
Tolstoy reveals the Shakespeare he knew and thus revealed himself. It's often interesting to hear how someone experienced Shakespeare, then wandered off into their own ideas of what it meant to them about what they wanted it to mean. And how disappointed they sometimes were. When it's Tolstoy doing so, it's often compelling. Though wrong.
