Archer McKenzie is a modern day wizard who works as a private detective, he has been single for some time after the death of his long-time boyfriend. Kirby is a well-known artist, who has been dating a man for three months and it is going well, his life is mostly average until one night he crosses paths with Archer.
The story is told from the alternating point of view of Archer and Kirby.
I really liked the description of this book, the idea of modern day wizards dealing with modern life and if necessary, how they would deal with some of the modern day evil deeds. And initially, the story had the promise of being a very suspenseful mystery, adventure and romance. For me, once the characters and plot were introduced, it seemed to go much faster than I would have expected so the opportunity to explore the various characters and elements did not carry out as much as I would have preferred.
However, I did like the character of Archer and while I would have loved more back story on him, he does come off the page as mysterious as you’d expect. Kirby was not a fully fleshed out in that he accepted things he was told more than I would think an adult who had only his brother and grandmother to depend on would, also, the synopsis suggests he has been dating “The One”, yet it turns out that is easy to forget. As a warning, yes, there is cheating in here and although it gets justified later, it’s still not something I’m a fan of reading. He was interesting in that he was an artist but when his brother goes missing, he suddenly wants in on the investigation and Archer does not stop him so he has some spunk.
As this is the first of a series, it will be interesting to see what the direction of the series is going to take, if it will continue to be about Archer and Kirby, or if there will be new characters brought in so that Archer and Kirby are then supporting characters. All of the potential is there for the series, and I hope that the author is able to expand on the ideas and extend the stories in future books as this story tried to cover a great deal in a short time frame and for me, as I said, some plot opportunities were missed. I would have liked to have read more time between Marcus and Kirby to build the tension so Kirby felt it and maybe even some back story on Marcus to lead to where his character was, which could have been done through time between Marcus and Kirby.
I finished with a few more questions than I expected, but if you like supernatural mysteries a bit lighter of being a shorter story, especially for a summertime read, then you will probably enjoy this story.
